About the Author

Robert & Katherine Bailey

Robert and Katherine Bailey met while serving in church ministry, teaching children about the Living, Loving Jesus. This influence has guided their 37-year marriage and their work as partners in business and community endeavors. Their interest in Latino military history began in 1981 when they first learned of a Mexican Medal of Honor recipient from the Houston area. In 1997, Robert, a real estate professional, attended a business development meeting where the local LULAC president shared the story of S/Sgt. Macario García. Moved by his legacy, the Baileys were later entrusted by García’s family to preserve and share his story, a responsibility that became their calling.

About the Book

Seize Occupy And Defend

“Seize Occupy and Defend” is a compelling historical biography that restores the legacy of Staff Sergeant Macario García, the first Mexican-born immigrant to earn the Medal of Honor for extraordinary heroism in World War II. Through meticulous research, military documentation, eyewitness testimony, and civil rights records, the authors trace his path from migrant laborer to decorated soldier and symbol of resilience. The book not only recounts his battlefield bravery but also confronts the discrimination he endured upon returning home, including the Oasis Café incident and the broader era of segregation. Through years of research, the authors’ work unveils the memory of the man who fought Hitler on the war front—and Jim Crow on the home front.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged.

I was genuinely moved by how carefully the authors reconstructed Garcia's journey. The military details are vivid, but it's the emotional depth of his post-war experiences that stays with you. The Oasis Café incident is handled with honesty and gravity. This book honors a man who fought for dignity on more than one battlefield. An essential read for anyone interested in civil rights history.

As a Mexican-American veteran, this book resonated with me on a personal level. The authors balance rigorous research with compassion, showing both Garcia's heroism and the barriers he faced after returning home. It's refreshing to see our community represented with such care and accuracy. This biography is more than a story—it's a reclamation of our place in American history.
